After broadcasting on cable and on campus since 1984, CHUO was granted an FM license by the CRTC, and settled in to its space at 89.1 FM on May 31, 1991. In June of 2006 CHUO celebrated its 15th anniversary.
CHUO is defined by its volunteers. These dedicated individuals devote their time to creating top quality programming, continually re-establishing CHUO’s identity.
CHUO is the Ottawa-Gatineau region’s only bilingual, community radio station. CHUO provides high-quality radio programming that speaks to the diversity, intelligence and rich social context of its audience.
CHUO is more than just entertainment; it’s a service that is, as a non-profit organization, provided at no cost. CHUO offers under-represented and often ignored factions of society the opportunity to be heard and listened to. CHUO is about social equity and inclusiveness often lacking in mainstream media.
Music, information, community. That’s CHUO!

Donate to CHUO today!CHUO aims to provide the community with the equipment, skills and resources to create and produce radio programming. We rely on the community’s generosity do so, and are reaching out for your pledge. Your support allows CHUO to continue exposing the region’s radio listeners to the music that the commercial radio just doesn’t play, giving a voice to cultural and community groups within the National Capital Region.
Funding Drive, held annually in March or April, is perhaps the best way for listeners to become part of CHUO. It is active community outreach. This activity is designed to unite all members of the station in the common goal of acquiring funds to keep the station in operation. CHUO is a non-profit organization and it’s important to recognize that although we are not here to make money, we do need a certain amount of money to continue broadcasting quality radio. The actual costs of running and maintaining a radio station are quite phenomenal. |
